Sodium CMC is a also known as sodium carboxymethyl cellulosewhich is a beta-(1,4)-D-glucopyranose polymer. It is a poly-anionic product which is synthesized by the alkali-catalysed reaction of cellulose with chloroacetic acid. It has a good solubility in water and can be easily dissolved in cold water and showsdispersibility. Sodium CMC is obtained from the plant fibre by the means of chemical modification. It has a chemical formula of C8H16NaO8 with a molecular weight approximately equals to 263.2 grams per mol. This white coloured powder is widely used as an emulsifier and thickener in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals and as a stabilizer for reagents.
